Enter the Young Farmer Success Act, which would extend the student loan debt forgiveness granted to persons in public service by the Higher Education Act of 1965 to full time farmer and farm workers. Big news from the National Young Farmers Coalition! The Young Farmer Success Act of 2015 (H.R. 2590) has been introduced in the House by Representative Chris Gibson (R-NY) and Representative Joe Courtney (D-CT) with the goal of adding farmers to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
Under the program, farmers who make 10 years of income-driven student loan payments would have the balance of their loans forgiven. This program already covers a number of other public service professions, including government service, teaching, and nursing.
The Young Farmer Success Act has support from a broad coalition of nearly 100 farming organizations including the National Farmers Union, Future Farmers of America, and Farm Aid.
