monsanto and foreign aid: forcing el salvador’s hand

From this June’s Foreign Policy Journal

The United States will withhold the Millennium Challenge Compact aid deal, approximately $277 million in aid, unless El Salvador purchases genetically-modified seeds from biotech giant, Monsanto. The Millennium Challenge Corporation is “a U.S. foreign aid agency that was created by the U.S. Congress in January 2004,” according to Sustainable Pulse, and serves as a conduit for foreign aid funds. MCC’s unethical aid conditions would force El Salvador to purchase controversial seeds from the American biotech corporation instead of purchasing non-GMO seeds from the country’s local farmers– an action that would have negative effects on El Salvador’s agricultural industry in addition to presenting serious health and environmental risks.

republished and open for peer review: long-term toxicity of a roundup herbicide and a roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize

In 2012, the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology published a study on the chronic toxicity of glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup and GM corn (Monsanto NK603). This study was met with much opposition and after a year of intense pressure, the journal retracted the study.
It’s back! This study has been republished by Environmental Sciences Europe and contains extra material addressing criticisms of the original publication. The raw data underlying the study’s findings are also published. The new paper presents the same results as before and the conclusions are unchanged.
The republished study is available HERE!

kyrgyzstan bans all gmo products and gm crops!

The Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan’s recent vote to ban all gmo products and gm crops is important. Why? It is estimated that 90% of all temperate fruit in the WORLD genetically comes from this region. With food forests dotting the mountainous countrysides of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, it is the Eden of the world, brandishing a diversity of ancient fruit genetics that is unparalleled  by any other place on earth. Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan are known as the birthplace of apples, where these genetics have been evolving for 4.5 million years. Good job, Kyrgyzstan!

stop the spread of gmos in the environment

etc group

Urgent request to address and halt the spread of genetically organisms
into the environment!

Several examples of the uncontrolled spread of genetically engineered plants into wild populations and ecosystems have been documented: cotton in Mexico, oilseed rape in North America, Japan, Switzerland and Australia and grasses in the USA. There are also cases of repeated transgene presence in landraces or local varieties of crop plants such as maize in Mexico and rice in China. This increasing trend towards uncontrolled spread of transgenes into wild populations and ecosystems raises a high level of concern for the release of new organisms such as genetically engineered trees, fish and insects and the challenges posed by emerging applications of synthetic biology. superweed map of the usa

Glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, has spawned a new generation of superweeds that are spreading rapidly across the United States.

Since farmers planting Monsanto’s genetically engineered Roundup Ready crops no longer need to worry about overdosing their crops with herbicide, they tend to spray more of it. And just as antibiotic overuse has resulted in antibiotic resistant drugs, constant use of Roundup and its active ingredient, glyphosate, has given rise to an epidemic of glyphosate resistant superweeds.

Use the interactive map HERE to find where superweeds have made their appearance. And learn more about three superweeds in particular: pigweed (Palmer amaranth)horseweed (Conyza canadensis), andragweed (Ambrosia trifida).

new york: buzz with rev. billy’s honeybeelujah campaign

honeybeelujah

Springtime Greetings to the Citizens of Earthalujahville!

This spring we run our parallel performances – our nonviolent dramatic activism and our run at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater on May and June Sunday afternoons in New York.  The outside and inside stages feed off each other, with information, arrests and whoops of “Earthalujah!”

Buzz with our HoneyBeeLujah campaign. We will conduct media-genic “bee-swarmings” in and around the property of Monsanto, Bayer, Cargill, and Archer Daniels Midland.  We will perform inside big big box stores where bee-killing chemicals are sold to domestic gardeners from the shelf.  The Bee-stinger-singers will follow the EXECUTIVES OF THE ABOMINABLE MONOCULTURE – into their lobbies, the parking lots and restaurants.  The workers in these hedge funds and chemical companies must be gently exposed to the truth about their pesticide poisons.

If you are in New York, please join us at one of our eight shows starting Sunday May 4th.

Earthalujah!
