evolution of organic premiers at ecofarm conference, jan. 27

1473039496093

Still from the film feature Severine and Elizabeth and Paul Kaiser of Singing Frogs farm, who are leaders in no-till farming and recently the key-note speakers at the NOFA MA Winter Conference.

This year at the EcoFarm Conference in Pacific Grove California, participants will get a chance to see a sneak preview of the documentary The Origins of Organic!

Evolution of Organic, according to its filmmakers, “brings us the story of organic agriculture, told by those who built the movement. A motley crew of back-to-the-landers, spiritual seekers and farmers’ sons and daughters rejected chemical industrial farming and set out to explore organic alternatives. It’s a heartfelt journey of change – from a small band of rebels to a cultural transformation in the way we grow and eat food. By now organic has gone mainstream – split into an industry oriented toward bringing organic to all people, and a movement that has realized a vision of sustainable agriculture. As interviewee Kelly Mulville says, “Creating health in the soil creates health in the ecosystem creates health in the atmosphere – and it all cycles around.””

All that, and Severine makes a cameo!

This year’s EcoFarm Conference, which also features incredible speakers, farmer mixers, and even dancing, takes place January 25-28 at the Asilomar Conference Grounds. Online registration is now closed but onsite walk-in registration begins Wed, Jan 25 – Sat, Jan 28 starting at 7am.

contradance to stop the pipeline in western mass, jan 14, cummington, ma

contradanceposterdark2

CONTRADANCE to Protect Otis State Forest / Sandisfield from Kinder Morgan’s Connecticut Expansion Pipeline
Saturday, January 14th, 7 p.m., West Cummington Parish House, 27 W. Main Street, West Cummington, MA
Proceeds to support legal work of PLAN-NE. Music by Steve Howland, Calling by Sadie Stull, Food from Alice’s Kitchen!
A little background: the Connecticut Expansion Pipeline is slated to run through Massachusetts’s Otis State Park, an old growth forest that is protected from development by the state constitution. Currently being fought in court, approval of the project undermines state sovereignty and threatens the health of wetlands, rivers, and the gorgeous Spectacle Pond. You can read a good summary of the project and its opposition from the Berkshire Eagle and learn more about the opposition to the pipeline from No Fracked Gas in Mass.
Lest you think this is a lost cause, we’d like to mention that last year, another Kinder Morgan-sponsored pipeline slated to run through Western Mass was successfully defeated through strong community resistance.

Calling all fellow Greenhorns, plant lovers, and herb nerds!

We’re getting together to celebrate the launch of my book Nature’s Remedies: An Illustrated Guide to Healing Herbs (Chronicle Books). We’ve also teamed up with Greenhorns folks to usher in the release of the latest edition of The New Farmers Almanac.

I’m planning to give a short talk, sort of a ‘people’s history of herbal medicine,’ that I’m excited to share with the Greenhorns community. We’re also going to be joined by a few herbalists, who will be on hand with their wares. Come get some healing, nourishing, and delicious gifts for your loved ones and learn more about medicinal herbs.

OUR LAND 2!
November 9-17th, in Albuquerque and Santa Fe New Mexico.
ALL THE INFORMATION IS HERE: www.agrariantrust.org/2016symposium
This will be the second Agrarian Trust OUR LAND symposium, and once again we’ve got speakers from around the country and around the region focusing our attention, analysis, activism and collective agency on issues relevant to your regional foodshed.
This event is presented by Agrarian Trust and has a focus on Land access, land transition and the issues underlying ownership and management of the territory required for an autonomous and sovereign food system.
The central themes of this symposium center on land-use and governance regimes of the southwest region.  We will learn about the acequias, a system of irrigation ditch commons brought by the Spanish. The history, management regimes and future prospects of this system represent a powerful curriculum for other commons-based systems. Can these ditch commons be explained to include their uplands and headwaters, or will ditch rights be lost to privatization and sold to developers?

An Evening Gathering to Support
the 2nd Annual International
Soil Not Oil Conference
Thurs, July 21, 7:30pm, 2016 Free
At the Farmer & the Cook Restaurant
339 W El Roblar Dr, Ojai (Meiners Oak) CA 93023
Short films about Soil & Carbon Farming including
excerpts from The Seeds of Vandana Shiva documentary film

The solution to climate change & the solution to poverty are the same”. Vandana Shiva

Thursday July 21, 7:30 pm , local groups in Ojai, CA are gathering to support both the Soil Not Oil international campaign & the upcoming second annual Soil Not Oil Conference in August of this year with an evening gathering of film & discussion in Ojai, CA. Local filmmaker Camilla Becket will be in attendance sharing excerpts from her soon to be released film The Seeds of Vandana, with other short films on soils & carbon farming also a part of the evening.

In 2015 the first Soil Not Oil conference was held in Northern California with the intent of supporting the Soil Not Oil international campaign launched by brilliant Indian scientist, eco-activist, & author Vandana Shiva.  Vanda Shiva is a founding member of both Regenerative International and the Navadany Foundation, who were among the first to connect the dots between climate change and the disastrous soil practices of industrial agriculture.

Restoring global soil quality is one of the best things we can do for climate change.  Because our lives are entirely dependent on the health of our soils, the Soil Not Oil Campaign demands the care and regeneration of soils worldwide. Emphasizing extensive restructuring of land management practices, especially agriculture, is key to combating climate change with biologically healthy soils capable of sequestering carbon from the atmosphere, while also restoring water cycles, stopping ocean acidification, re-establishing biodiversity, improving food production, and revitalizing local economies across the planet.

The film & discussion event takes place on Thursday July 21, 2016, 7:30- 9pm, at the Farmer & the Cook Restaurant, 339 W El Roblar Dr, Ojai (Meiners Oak) CA 93023.   No reservations required.
