One of the pillars of the Greenhorns mission is securing land for agricultural use, and then connecting those who hold land with young people who want to stick their fingers in the earth. One of our new projects, dubbed Serve Your Country Food, endeavors to collect and map in one central place all of the resources available to farmers in America. The most recent edition to this work-in-progress is an enormous list of more than 800 land trusts across the country.
Land trusts are an essential force in conserving land from development and getting it into the hands of the brave young men and woman willing to farm it. However, the world of land trusts can be difficult to navigate for those of us who are not land rights lawyers. That’s the National Young Farmer’s Coalition (NYFC) has put together a free-to-download and easy-to-read booklet Finding Farmland: A Farmer’s Guide to Working with Land Trusts. It’s an amazing resource for farmers, land trust staff, and farm service providers alike.
Finally, Serve Your Country Food is a work in progress. There’s an enormous amount of information up there, but we want more. If you have cartographic knowledge or expertise, a useful dataset, or any other helpful information we encourage you to reach out to greenhornsoffice [at] gmail.com
