It’s a New York Times Magazine food fight and the Greenhorns are present full force.  This issue highlights the work of young food activists across the country, the youngest being our very own, Severine, promoting Serve Your Country Food. Barack Obama was just finishing his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention when I arrived at a young farmers’ meet and greet in The Mission, one of a series of events taking place this weekend during Slow Food Nation. “We had a delightful visit from Severine from The Greenhorns yesterday. We dug into a fresh blueberry peach pie while she told us about the many interesting projects she’s involved in – including getting The Greenhorns movie produced and distributed. Her passion for getting young farmers hooked up with each other is wonderfully infectious – you go, Severine, we’re big fans!”

The brainchild of farmer/activist Severine von Tscharner Fleming, the project has received attention in the New York Times, from the Slow Food movement and elsewhere. The documentary explores the triumphs and challenges of this post-modern agriculture revival, with part of the film’s self-described purpose being to help fan the flames of the movement’s success.”

“Here at Slow Food USA, we’ve been noticing an interesting and exciting trend: young folks eschewing the corporate/industrial complex and going back to the land and back to the kitchen.” Continue reading…

The idealistic young farmers and gardeners fueling this ag-revolt have been christened “The Greenhorns” by one extraordinary, exuberant young farmer/filmmaker, Severine von Tscharner Fleming, who’s documenting their horticultural heroics in a film by the same name.” Continue reading…
