interns wanted – Oxford, NY

Greenhorns, this is a terrific opportunity – particularly for the artistic types out there.

Holler Farm is an artist-run, 106-acre farm located in Oxford, New York, in the Southern Tier. We are seeking interns who are interested in learning about diverse organic agriculture using manual, tractor, and draft animal power.

Interns will be involved in growing a wide range of vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit, and mushrooms for local farmersน markets; harvesting wild foods sustainably; producing small-batch maple syrup, mead, and apple cider; baking bread for market; caring for livestock (honey bees, Indian Runner ducks, chickens, draft horse); managing a woodlot for firewood and timber; and maintaining the farmstead.

Besides being involved in the farm activities, interns will help us launch a small artist residency here with barn studios for drawing, sculpture, blacksmithing, and hand papermaking. Interns are welcome to stay 1 to 6 months (with a 2-week trial period) anytime between April 1 and September 30. We expect interns to work 6 hours per day, 5 days a week. For long-term interns, there is a $250/month stipend available after the first month, plus a separate garden for personal agricultural experiments, and space for your art practice. We provide accommodations, one home- cooked vegetarian meal per day, and open access to farm-raised food for self-prepared meals. We are a 3.5-hour drive from New York City, and about an hour from Ithaca, Binghamton, and Oneonta. There is a bus to Oxford from New York City. Holler is a Bavarian term for elderberry, a plant long relied upon for a range of medicinal, cultural, and culinary uses.
