Young farmer expanding her business and growing interest

Growing up, Erin Bullock couldn’t even tell you what farming was.

“It wasn’t even on my radar,” says the 29-year-old Rochester resident. “I didn’t even know what a farmer did. It was like, ‘What does a tractor do? It drives across a field, but what’s it doing?’”

These days, Bullock is one of Rochester’s up-and-coming farmers, utilizing a concept that’s not too common locally. She runs Mud Creek Farms, a two-and-a-half acre organic Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm in Victor, which recently has expanded.

Like most CSA’s, Mud Creek works on an economic model in which people buy shares of the farm and then receive a basket of its produce once a week during the harvest season. Mud Creek grows all sorts of vegetables, everything from broccoli and corn to Brussels sprouts and eggplant. The cost of a share for a 20-week season (June through the end of October) is $480.

“I think it’s a growing concept,” says Bullock. “There are a few CSA’s in the general area, but not too many right around Rochester.”
