land available – New Mexico

Re-post from Comfood:USDAyrbk1905plateLXII

Please see the email below from a contact that saw our work with farmers here in Phoenix.  She has land available to farmers in New Mexico and would like to see her land put to use.  Her description of land and phone number are below.

We own land in Abiquiu New Mexico – 27 acres in total.

This is land close to the Chama river. Of the 27 acres, 12 have irrigation rights but more can be farmed than that. It is beautiful land with open pasture and the irrigation ditch and an area of trees. Currently the neighbor runs his cows on the land so some type of fence would have to be considered in the farming. We could be part of that consideration.

We also own 6 acres of an 18 acre parcel right outside of the town of Taos.

This is all irrigated by ditch irrigation. The other 12 acres are owned by two friends. All of us want to farm this land and some type of grass would probably be best on this 18 acres. Two years ago a local farmer planted alfalfa (we paid for the seed)and he got about 900 bales of hay. Right now a bale can go for $10-14 per bale. He got to keep all that he baled. Not too bad an income for the summer.

We would like to sell the land in Abiquiu and the six acres we own in Taos. Land is not moving in the real estate market so it is a shame to have it just sitting there. We are looking at all options and saw an article in the Phoenix paper about the organic farming and thought we would see if anyone wanted to farm it. Hay is a good product for the summer in New Mexico.
